Bezienswaardigheden / tips 2025:

1) Bar Harbor: De enige grote plaats op Mount Desert Island is het levendige Bar Harbor. Het ondanks het toerisme gemoedelijk gebleven stadje met 5200 permanente inwoners ligt aan de oostkust van het eiland, dat al in de jaren tachtig van de 19e eeuw werd ontdekt door welvarende industriëlen en bankiers. In de daaropvolgende decennia kwam de toemalige jetset geregeld recreëren aan de Frenchman Bay. In 1947 viel het plaatsje echter ten prooi aan een grote brand. Deze verwoestte niet alleen de voornaamste villa's, maar ook zijn reputatie als miljonairsenclave. Intussen hebben bezoekers met een smallere beurs de plaats van de rijken ingenomen en een lucratieve toeristenindustrie op gang geholpen. Vanaf mei tot oktober begint het toeristenseizoen, velen komen voor Acadia National Park. In en rond Main Street vind je de meeste winkels en restaurants. 

2) Abbe Museum: Met ruim 50.000 museumstukken documenteert het Abbe Museum de geschiedenis van de indianen die al 10.000 jaar in de staat Maine leven. Je ziet in dit museum onder meer pottenbakkerswaren, van steen en botten vervaardigde werktuigen en archeologische vondsten die inzicht geven in de cultuur van de Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Micmac en Maliseetstammen. Naast het museum liggen de Wild Gardens of Acadia, met zo'n 300 plantensoorten uit de streek. 

3) Bar Harbor Historical Society Museum: In 1947 verwoestte een brand 6880 ha natuurgebied en een derde van de zomerhuisjes op Bar Harbor, waardoor het dorp zijn naam als vakantieoord voor de high society verloor. Op oude foto's zijn die roemruchte tijden, maar ook de gevolgen van de brand te zien. Gelukkig zijn verschillende oude bezienswaardigheden verbouwd tot stijlvolle hotels. Een ticket voor een volwassen kost $ 18,00. 

4) Island Explorer Bus: Naast het park Village Green bij Kennebec Street vind je de centrale verzamelplaats voor de gratis Island Explorer bus, die vervoer biedt naar de bezienswaardigheden op het eiland waaronder een gedeelte van Acadia National Park. Er zijn diverse routes, de bus stopt bij diverse hotels, restaurants, campings en stranden in en rond Bar Harbor. De bus die naar Acadia National Park rijdt stopt slechts bij bepaalde haltes. Hou er rekening mee dat je eventueel moet overstappen op een andere Island Explorer Bus die andere haltes in Acadia National Park aandoen. 

5) De Cat Ferry: Tussen Bar Harbor en de stad Yarmouth in de Canadese provincie Nova Scotia vaart een ferry voor passagiers en auto's. Een enkele reis tocht duurt ca 3,5 uur. Dit is Noord Amerika's snelste autoferry naar Yarmouth (Nova Scotia in Canada). Het schip kan ongeveer 700 passagiers en 200 voertuigen vervoeren, waaronder auto's, campers en motoren. Aan boord zijn er voldoende eet en drinkgelegenheden. Als je geluk hebt kun je ook walvissen spotten. Hou er wel rekening mee dat er een uur tijdverschil is tussen Bar Harbor en Yarmouth. 



Highlights / tips 2025: 

1) Bar Harbor: The only large town on Mount Desert Island is the lively Bar Harbor. Despite the tourism, the small town with 5,200 permanent residents has remained peaceful and is located on the east coast of the island, which was discovered by wealthy industrialists and bankers in the 19th century. In the following decades, the former jet set regularly came to recreate at Frenchman Bay. In 1947, the town was ravaged by a great fire that destroyed not only its grand mansions but also its reputation as a millionaire’s enclave. Meanwhile, visitors with smaller pockets have replaced the wealthy and helped create a lucrative tourist industry. The tourist season begins in May through October, and many come for Acadia National Park. Most of the shops and restaurants are located in and around Main Street. 

2) Abbe Museum: With over 50,000 exhibits, the Abbe Museum documents the history of Native Americans who have lived in Maine for 10,000 years. The museum features pottery, stone and bone tools, and archaeological finds that provide insight into the cultures of the Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Micmac, and Maliseet peoples. Next to the museum is the Wild Gardens of Acadia, with some 300 species of plants from the region. 

3) Bar Harbor Historical Society Museum: In 1947, a fire destroyed 6,880 hectares of nature reserve and a third of the summer cottages on Bar Harbor, causing the village to lose its reputation as a resort for high society. Old photos show those glorious times, but also the consequences of the fire. Fortunately, several old sights have been converted into stylish hotels. An adult ticket costs $18.00.

4) Island Explorer Bus: Next to the Parc Village Green on Kennebec Street is the central meeting point for the free Island Explorer bus, which provides transportation to the island’s attractions, including part of Acadia National Park. There are several routes, the bus stops at various hotels, restaurants, campgrounds and beaches in and around Bar Harbor. The bus to Acadia National Park only stops at certain stops. Keep in mind that you may have to transfer to another Island Explorer Bus that serves other stops in Acadia National Park.

5) The Cat Ferry: A passenger and car ferry operates between Bar Harbor and the town of Yarmouth in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. A one way trip takes approximately 3.5 hours. This is North America's fastest car ferry to Yarmouth (Nova Scotia, Canada). The ship can carry approximately 700 passengers and 200 vehicles, including cars, campers and motorcycles. There are plenty of places to eat and drink on board. If you are lucky you can also spot whales. Keep in mind that there is a one hour time difference between Bar Harbor and Yarmouth.

Bar Harbor is van oudsher een bijzonder populair vakantieoord: het heeft een unieke combinatie van stranden, baaien en eilanden. Langs de haven kun je genieten van vele goede vis restaurants die hier volop aanwezig zijn. 

Bar Harbor has traditionally been a very popular holiday resort: it has a unique combination of beaches, bays and islands. Along the harbour you can enjoy many good fish restaurants that are fully present.





Bar Harbor is ook een gezellig stadje, er is een overvloed aan winkels, restaurants, cafe's en ijswinkels die voornamelijk in Main Street en West Street bij de haven gevestigd zijn. 

Bar Harbor is also a pleasant town, with an abundance of shops, restaurants, cafes and ice cream shops mainly located on Main Street and West Street near the harbor. 





          Tevens is Bar Harbor een hele goede uitvalsbasis voor een bezoek aan Acadia National Park (zie film).

De Ivy Manor Inn is een historische herberg en ligt in het centrum van Bar Harbor (hier op de foto). Buiten kun je heerlijk genieten van een drankje en de zonsondergang. Dit is een populaire spot om mensen te bekijken.

Het mooie Village Green een park dat in 1920 is gebouwd door de beroemde landschapsarchitect Beatrix Farrand. Later in 1999 is het park gerenoveerd en is het vandaag de dag een park waar mensen zich verzamelen en genieten van het samen zijn.
