Bezienswaardigheden / tips Littleton 2026:

1) Littleton: Littleton, gevestigd in 1770 aan de oevers van de Ammonoosuc-rivier, heeft lang gediend als een centrum voor handel in de White Mountains. Toen in 1790 een dam in de rivier werd gebouwd, werd er een houtzagerij en korenmolen gebouwd en werden er winkels in de buurt geopend. Andere fabrikanten in Littleton produceerden uiteenlopende producten zoals aardappelwhisky, zeisen, washandjes, horloges, meubels, koetsen en sleeën. Dit was het begin van de industrie en de kenmerkende Main Street van Littleton. Tegenwoordig is Littleton een leuke gezellige stad met een aantal bezienswaardigheden. Er is aanbod van vele winkels (ook veel snoep winkels) en restaurants. Ook zijn er voldoende wandelpaden uitgezet waardoor Littleton aantrekkelijk is voor de natuurliefhebber en mensen die op zoek zijn naar gezelligheid.  

2) Riverwalk Covered Bridge: De Riverwalk Covered Bridge is niet meteen zichtbaar vanaf de hoofdweg, maar ligt achter Main Street in the River District. Het ligt naast het Schilling Beer Co gebouw. De 70 meter overdekte brug werd in 2004 voltooid nadat de oude brug door een storm was beschadigd. Vanaf de brug heb je mooie uitzichten op Littleton en de rivier. De Littleton Riverwalk trail loopt over deze brug. 

3) Pollyanna of Littleton Statue: In 2002 onthulde Littleton het beroemde bronzen standbeeld ter ere van Eleanor H. Porter, die van 1868 tot 1892 in Littleton woonde en de klassieke kinderroman Pollyanna schreef. De titelfiguur is Pollyanna Whittier, een elfjarig weesmeisje dat in het fictieve stadje Beldingsville in Vermont gaat wonen bij haar rijke maar strenge en koude, oude tante Polly Harrington. Zij wil Pollyanna niet in huis nemen, maar vindt dat het haar plicht is tegenover haar overleden zus Jennifer. Ondanks ze niet welkom is heeft Pollyanna altijd een vrolijke houding. Het beeld staat voor de bibliotheek in Main Street. 

4) Pollyana Glad Day: Elke tweede zaterdag in juni viert Littleton de Pollyanna blije dag (glad day). Er staan kraampjes met lekkernijen en er worden spelletjes georganiseerd. Zowel volwassen als kinderen verkleden zich als Pollyana. 

5) Littleton Grist Mill: Langs de oevers van de Ammonoosuc River ligt de Littleton Grist Mill. De historische molen opende voor het eerst zijn deuren in 1798 en is volledig gerestaureerd tot zijn oorspronkelijke uiterlijk. Vandaag de dag is het een restaurant waar je heerlijke pizza's kunt eten en waar je kunt genieten van de verse gebrouwde bier. 

6) Trails: Maak een wandeling over een van de vele wandelpaden, zoals de Dells, Pine Hill Trails of Kilburn Crags. De Kilburn Crags geeft je een prachtig uitzicht over Littleton en omgeving. Dit is de meest populaire trail van alle trails. 



Highlights / tips Littleton 2026: 

1) Littleton: Littleton, settled in 1770 on the banks of the Ammonoosuc River, has long served as a center of commerce in the White Mountains. When a dam was built on the river in 1790, a sawmill and gristmill were built and stores were opened nearby. Other manufacturers produced a variety of products such as potato whiskey, scythes, flannels, watches, furniture, carriages and sleighs in Littleton. This was the beginning of the industry and the characteristic Main Street of Littleton. Nowadays Littleton is a nice cozy city with a number of attractions. There are many shops (including many candy stores) and restaurants. There are also plenty of hiking trails, making Littleton attractive for nature lovers and people looking for fun. 

2) Riverwalk Covered Bridge: The Riverwalk Covered Bridge is not immediately visible from the main road, but it is located behind Main Street in the River District. It is located next to the Schilling Beer Co. building. The 230-foot (70 meters) covered bridge was completed in 2004 after the old bridge was damaged by a storm. The bridge offers beautiful views of Littleton and the river. The Littleton Riverwalk trail crosses this bridge. 

3) Pollyanna of Littleton Statue: In 2002, Littleton unveiled the famous bronze statue honoring Eleanor H. Porter, who lived in Littleton from 1868 to 1892 and wrote the classic children's novel Pollyanna.The title character is Pollyanna Whittier, an eleven-year-old orphan who moves to the fictional town of Beldingsville, Vermont, to live with her wealthy but stern and cold old aunt Polly Harrington. She does not want to take Pollyanna into her home, but feels it is her duty to her deceased sister Jennifer. Despite being unwelcome, Pollyanna always has a cheerful attitude. The statue stands in front of the library on Main Street.

4) Pollyana Glad Day: Every second Saturday in June, Littleton celebrates Pollyanna Glad Day. There are stalls with treats and games are organised. Both adults and children dress up as Pollyana. 
 

5) Littleton Grist Mill: Along the banks of the Ammonoosuc River lies the Littleton Grist Mill. The historic mill first opened in 1798 and has been completely restored to its original appearance. Today, it is a restaurant where you can eat delicious pizza and enjoy fresh brewed beer.


6) Trails: Take a walk on one of the many hiking trails, such as the Dells, Pine Hill Trails or Kilburn Crags. The Kilburn Crags gives you a beautiful view of Littleton and the surrounding area. This is the most popular trail of all the trails.





Littleton ligt aan de noordelijke rand van de White Mountains op de kruising van US Route 302 en Route 116 langs de Ammonoosuc rivier en is een zeer aangenaam stadje om te bezoeken.

Located on the northern edge of the White Mountains at the intersection of U.S. Route 302 and Route 116 along the Ammonoosuc River lies Littleton, a very pleasant town to visit. 





Littleton heeft een gezellige winkelstraat en ontzettend veel snoepwinkels en ligt gunstig aan de Ammonoosuc rivier. 

Littleton has a nice shopping street and lots of candy stores and is conveniently located on the Ammonoosuc River. 





Het River District van Littleton loopt langs de Ammonoosuc rivier en omvat een overdekte voetgangersbrug, wandelpaden, restaurants en een kleinschalige bierbrouwerij.  

Littleton's River District runs along the Ammonoosuc River and includes a covered pedestrian bridge, walking trails, restaurants and a beer brewery. 



De Schilling Beer Co ligt in het River District en is een kleinschalige bierbrouwerij die gevestigd is in een gerenoveerde drie verdiepingen tellende oude graanmolen uit 1797 (hier op de foto). 

Located in the River District, The Schilling Beer Co. is a small-scale beer brewery housed in a renovated three-story old grist mill dating back to 1797 (pictured here). 





De bekend covered bridge (overdekte brug) is 70 meter lang (230 feet) en werd gebouwd in 2004. De brug is dus niet historisch want de orginele brug werd tijdens een zware storm omver geblazen. 

The famous covered bridge is 230 feet long (70 meters) and was built in 2004. The bridge is therefore not historic because the original bridge was blown down during a heavy storm.
 






Vanaf de covered bridge (overdekte brug) heb je een prachtig uitzicht op de oude Graanmolen (Gristmill) en de Ammonoosuc rivier. 

From the covered bridge you have a beautiful view of the old Gristmill and the Ammonoosuc River.







De White Mountains Canning Co is bekend om zijn verse producten zoals jam, augurken, sauzen, mosterd en olijfolie. Buiten de natuurlijke producten kun je hier diverse verschillende snoep kopen waaronder verschillende popcorn gegoten met heerlijke caramel. Ook worden er hier heerlijke verse donuts gemaakt (zie film).

The White Mountains Canning Co is famous and known for its fresh products such as jams, pickles, sauces, mustard and olive oil. Besides the natural products, you can buy various different sweets, including different types of popcorn poured with delicious caramel (see film). They also make delicious fresh donuts here. (see film). 







Buiten de bibliotheek van Littleton, staat een standbeeld van een meisje. Dat meisje is Pollyanna de heldin van een klassieke kinderroman geschreven door Eleanor H. Porter, een inwoner van Littleton.

Outside the Littleton Library, there is a statue of a girl. That girl is Pollyanna, the heroine of a classic children's novel written by Littleton resident Eleanor H. Porter.
