Bezienswaardigheden / tips Charleston 2026:
1) Charleston: Charleston (niet te verwarren met de bekende stad Charleston in South Carolina) is de hoofdstad en grootste stad in de staat West Virginia. De stad is ook de politieke hoofdstad van West Virginia. Het State Capitol gebouw heeft een indrukwekkende gouden koepel, zelfs hoger dan die van het Amerikaanse Capitool in Washington D.C. Je vindt hier verschillende historische gebouwen en wijken, zoals Downtown Charleston Historic District. Charleston is niet echt een toeristische bestemming. Het is vooral een culturele, sportieve en natuurlijke bestemming met een groeiende reputatie met name dankzij vele evenementen en recreatiemogelijkheden. Daarom wordt het voornamelijk bezocht door Amerikanen en blijft het Internationaal toerisme achterwege. Ondanks is het een leuke en mooie stad om een keer gezien te hebben.
2) West Virginia State Capitol: Het West Virginia State Capitol is het bekendste gebouw van de staat en een van de meest herkenbare gebouwen in Charleston. Het ligt aan de oever van de Kanawha River en het is gebouwd tussen 1924 en 1932. Het is ontworpen door architect Cass Gilbert, dezelfde architect die ook het United States Supreme Court Building in Washington D.C. ontwierp. Het opvallendste kenmerk is de gouden koepel, Het is 89 meter hoog (292 feet) en bedekt met 23,5 karaats bladgoud. Hij is zelfs 5 meter hoger dan de koepel van het Capitol in Washington D.C. Het capitol is toegankelijk voor bezoekers en je kunt hier gratis rondleidingen krijgen. De rondleidingen starten elke 30 minuten op maandag t/m vrijdag tussen 09.00 en 12.00 en tussen 13.00 en 15.oo uur. In de weekenden zijn er geen rondleidingen.
3) Haddad Riverfront Park: Haddad Riverfront Park is een van de bekendste openbare plekken in het centrum van Charleston. Het ligt direct aan de Kanawha rivier en wordt vaak gezien als de voortuin van de stad waar locals samenkomen voor evenementen, muziek en festivals. Het park ligt tussen Court Street en Capitol Street langs de rivier en op loopafstand van het centrum. Vanaf het park heb je een mooi uitzicht over de rivier en de skyline van Charleston.
4) Live on the Levee: Live on the Levee is een populaire gratis zomerconcert serie in Haddad Riverfront Park. Het is een van de bekendste evenementen van de stad en trekt elke zomer veel inwoners en bezoekers. Het is een openluchtconcert met live bands en wordt georganiseerd door de stad Charleston. Er wordt diverse muziek gespeeld zoals rock, country, blues en pop. Het vind plaats op elke vrijdagavond van eind mei tot begin augustus. De concerten beginnen meestal rond 18:00 en duren tot ongeveer 21:30. Er zijn ook genoeg foodtrucks, eetkraampjes en drank stands. Het evenement is familievriendelijk en bedoeld als plek waar de hele gemeenschap samenkomt.
5) Capitol Street: Capitol Street is een historische winkelstraat in het centrum, bekend om zijn negentiende en vroeg twintigste eeuwse architectuur. Ze vormt het hart van het commerciële district, met cafés, boetieks en toegang tot de Kanawha rivier. Het gezelligste gedeelte van Capitol Street ligt tussen Quarrier Street en Lee Street. Dit is het gedeelte waar de meeste eet en drinkgelegenheden zitten.

You'll find several historic buildings and neighborhoods here, such as the Downtown Charleston Historic District. Charleston isn't really a tourist destination. It's primarily a cultural, sports, and natural destination with a growing reputation thanks to its many events and recreational opportunities. Therefore, it's primarily visited by Americans, with international tourism remaining relatively untouched. Despite this, it is a nice and beautiful city to see once.
2) West Virginia State Capitol: The West Virginia State Capitol is the state's most famous building and one of the most recognizable in Charleston. It is located on the banks of the Kanawha River and was built between 1924 and 1932. It was designed by architect Cass Gilbert, the same architect who designed the United States Supreme Court Building in Washington, D.C. Its most striking feature is the golden dome, which is 292 feet (89 meters) high and covered with 23.5 carat gold leaf. It is even 16 feet (5 meters) taller than the Capitol dome in Washington, D.C. 3) Haddad Riverfront Park: Haddad Riverfront Park is one of the most famous public spaces in downtown Charleston. The park is located between Court Street and Capitol Street along the river and is within walking distance of downtown. From the park, you have a beautiful view of the river and the Charleston skyline.
4) Live on the Levee: Live on the Levee is a popular free summer concert series in Haddad Riverfront Park. It's one of the city's best-known events and attracts many residents and visitors every summer. It's an outdoor concert featuring live bands and is organized by the City of Charleston. A variety of music is played, including rock, country, blues, and pop. It takes place every Friday evening from late May to early August. Concerts usually begin around 6:00 PM and last until about 9:30 PM. There are also plenty of food trucks, food stalls, and drink stands. The event is family-friendly and designed to be a place where the entire community can come together.
5) Capitol Street: Capitol Street is a historic shopping street in downtown, known for its 19th- and early 20th-century architecture. It forms the heart of the commercial district, with cafés, boutiques, and access to the Kanawha River. The liveliest section of Capitol Street is between Quarrier Street and Lee Street. This is where most of the food and beverage establishments are located.
