Bezienswaardigheden / tips Chimney Rock State Park 2025:

1) Chimney Rock State Park: Chimney Rock State Park omvat het 499-trap pad naar de iconische monoliet zelf, evenals verschillende andere wandelpaden en watervallen, waaronder de enorme 123 meter (404 feet) hoge Hickory Nut Falls. De Skyline Trail slingert langs bergkambossen en steile kliffen naar Peregrine's Point, het hoogste punt van het park. De gezinsvriendelijke Great Woodland Adventure Trail richt de schijnwerpers op boswezens voor een educatief pad van 9,6 km (6 mijl) door het bos, terwijl het Old Rock Café en de Sky Lounge Deli plekken bieden om te ontspannen en bij te tanken. De Ticket Plaza is dagelijks geopend van 8.30 tot 17.30 uur en gasten kunnen tot 19.00 uur in het park verblijven. De entree is $ 14,00 per volwassen. Als het extreem druk is (meestal in het hoogseizoen en in de weekenden) en de parkeerplaatsen zijn vol kun je gebruik maken van een gratis shuttleservice. Vanaf de Sky Lounge Deli kun je ook de lift nemen naar Chimney Rock en kun je de 499 trappen overslaan. 

2) Exclamation Point Trail: De Exclamation Point Trail biedt toegang tot enkele van de beste uitzichten en meest bekende geologische formaties in het park. Het pad begint direct tegenover de trap die naar Chimney Rock leidt en loopt door naar de klif. Deze 20 minuten durende, matige tot inspannende wandeling gaat grotendeels bergopwaarts en de klim is 45 meter hoog (150 feet). Het pad maakt gebruik van een combinatie van trappen en haarspeldbochten die naar populaire bezienswaardigheden leiden, zoals de Opera Box, Devil's Head en Exclamation Point. 

3) Skyline Trail: Neem vanaf de bovenste parkeerplaats de Outcroppings Trail naar Chimney Rock, onderweg moet je 499 trappen beklimmen. Aan de voet van de trap naar de rots zie je de trap voor de Exclamation Point Trail. Zodra je de Exclamation Point hebt bereikt zie je het Skyline Trail bord staan. Het pad passeert een picknickplaats bij Peregrine's Point (hoogste punt), waar je het mooiste uitzicht hebt op de kloof en het meer van Lure. De Skyline Trail loopt door een prachtig bos waarbij je uiteindelijk ook een uitzicht hebt op de Hickory Nut kloof en de bovenste watervallen van de Hickory Nut watervallen. De 1,8 kilometer lange route begint bij Exclamation Point en wordt beschouwd als een gematigde wandeling. 

4) Hickory Nut Falls Trail: De Hickory Nut Falls trail is toegankelijk door de trap af te lopen vanaf de hoofdparkeerplaats of rechtstreeks vanaf de parkeerplaats op een lager niveau. Loop ongeveer 400 meter (quarter mile) rechtdoor aan de rechterkant langs de Four Seasons Trail. De Hickory Nut Falls trail zelf is voor het grootste deel tamelijk rustig en breed, met enkele gematigde stukken bergop, maar wordt tegen het einde rotsachtiger naarmate het geluid van de watervallen toeneemt. Blijf langs de hoge rotswanden aan de linkerkant lopen en loop de trap op om het platform onder de watervallen te bereiken. Dit is het enige pad in Chimney Rock Park dat uitzicht biedt op de 123 meter (404 feet) hoge Hickory Nut watervallen. De Skyline Trail bereikt de top van de watervallen met uitzicht op de bovenloop, maar biedt geen zicht op de watervallen zelf. De klif van de watervallen ligt op het noorden, hierdoor kunnen de watervallen in het winterseizoen bevriezen. Deze trail is samen met de Skyline Trail het drukst bezocht van alle trails. 

5) The Four Seasons Trail: De Four Seasons trail is een wandelpad van 1,9 km lang. Het is wel een trail waarbij je hetzelfde pad weer terug moet lopen. Over het algemeen beschouwd als een redelijk uitdagende route, het duurt gemiddeld 42 minuten om de wandeling te voltooien. Dit is een zeer populair gebied om te wandelen. Het pad is het hele jaar door geopend en is op elk moment prachtig om te bezoeken. 

6) The Great Woodland Adventure Trail: Deze trail is speciaal gemaakt voor kinderen. De trail bestaat uit een kronkelig pad van 1,6 kilometer waar boswezens in de schijnwerpers staan op 12 Discovery Stations. Grady the Groundhog, de dierenopvoeder van het park, illustreert hoe zijn bosvrienden leven, waaronder eekhoorns, kikkers, uilen en vlinders. Levensgrote houten en metalen sculpturen van lokale ambachtslieden en kunstenaars brengen het pad tot leven. 

7) Outcroppings Trail: Het verbeterde pad, brengt je 499 treden omhoog naar Chimney Rock met onderweg prachtige uitzichten. Waar mogelijk bezoek de Gneiss-grot, een natuurlijke formatie die zijn naam ontleent aan het Henderson Gneiss-graniet. Vaak is deze grot dicht vanwege de activiteiten van veel vleermuizen. Onderweg wil je de Grotto, Subway en Preekstoelrots niet missen, populaire bezienswaardigheden die in het voorjaar van 2015 zijn heropend. Vanaf deze uitkijkpunten heb je uitzicht op Hickory Nut Gorge, de Carolina Piedmont en Lake Lure. 

8) Dirty Dancing: Het gebied rond Lake Lure en Chimney Rock staat bekend om een aantal filmlocaties. Voordat je de officiële stad Lake Lure bereikt, begint het Dirty Dancing-gedeelte van je tour. Hoewel de film zich afspeelt in de Catskills, is hij vrijwel geheel op locatie in en rond het meer opgenomen. Aan de overkant van Chimney Rock ligt de Esmeralda Inn, waar nu de dansvloer van Dirty Dancing is gevestigd. Het gezellige lodgeresort is ingericht met steen en natuurlijk hout en heeft een enorme open haard en rockers op de veranda rondom, evenals het internationale Prime Restaurant. Bij het meer kun je de omgeving verkennen per boot met Lake Lure Tours. De overdekte boot neemt fans van Patrick Swayze en Jennifer Gray mee rond het meer, maar niet-fans zullen zich ook niet vervelen met het uitzicht.

9) Last of the Mohicans: Fans van Last of the Mohicans (1992) kunnen twee routes afleggen: de Skyline Trail en Hickory Nut Falls (de locatie van de climaxstrijd van de film).

10) Visitor Center: Tip: Vraag bij het bezoekerscentrum om een gids voor filmlocaties in het park. 



UPDATE: DUE TO FLOODING, CHIMNEY ROCK WAS NO LONGER ACCESSIBLE. IN THE MEANTIME, AREAS HAVE BEEN RESTORED, A TEMPORARY BRIDGE HAS BEEN CONSTRUCTED AND THE ROADS TO THE PARK HAVE BEEN PARTIALLY REPAIRED. THE PARK REOPENED TO VISITORS ON JUNE 27, 2025, BUT YOU CAN ONLY VISIT THE PARK WITH A RESERVATION. RECONSTRUCTION IS STILL ONGOING. SEE THE VIDEO OF THE DESTRUCTION. 

Highlights / tips Chimney Rock State Park 2025:

1) Chimney Rock State Park: Chimney Rock State Park includes the 499-step trail to the iconic monolith itself, as well as several other hiking trails and waterfalls, including the massive 404-foot (123 meter) Hickory Nut Falls. The Skyline Trail winds past ridge forests and steep cliffs to Peregrine's Point, the park's highest point. The family-friendly Great Woodland Adventure Trail shines a spotlight on woodland creatures for a 6 mile (9.6 km) educational trail through the forest, while the Old Rock Café and Sky Lounge Deli offer places to relax. The Ticket Plaza is open daily from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM and guests can stay in the park until 7:00 PM. Admission is $14.00 per adult. If it is extremely busy (usually in high season and on weekends) and the parking spaces are full, you can use a free shuttle service. From the Sky Lounge Deli, you can also take the elevator to Chimney Rock and skip the 499 steps. 

2) Exclamation Point Trail: The Exclamation Point Trail provides access to some of the best views and most well-known geological formations in the park. The trail starts directly across the stairs leading to Chimney Rock and continues to the cliff. This 20-minute, moderate to strenuous hike is mostly uphill and the climb is 150 feet (45 meters). The trail uses a combination of stairs and switchbacks that lead to popular landmarks such as the Opera Box, Devil's Head and Exclamation Point. 

3) Skyline Trail: From the upper parking lot, take the Outcroppings Trail to Chimney Rock, climbing 499 steps along the way. At the base of the stairs to the rock you will see the stairs for the Exclamation Point Trail. Once you reach the Exclamation Point you will see the Skyline Trail sign. The trail passes a picnic area at Peregrine's Point (highest point), which offers the best views of the gorge and Lake Lure. The Skyline Trail runs through a beautiful forest where you ultimately have a view of the Hickory Nut Gorge and the upper falls of the Hickory Nut Falls. The 1.1-mile (1.8 km) trail starts at Exclamation Point and is considered a moderate hike.

4) Hickory Nut Falls Trail: The Hickory Nut Falls trail may be accessed by going down the stairs from the main parking lot or directly from the lower level parking area. About a quarter mile in continue straight past the Four Seasons Trail on the right. The Hickory Nut Falls trail itself is fairly uneventful and wide for the most part, with some moderate uphill sections, but becomes rockier towards the end as the sound of the falls increases. Keep going past high cliff walls on the left and up the stairs to reach the platform under the falls. This is the only trail in Chimney Rock Park that offers a view of the 404 feet (123-meter) high Hickory Nut Falls. The Skyline Trail reaches the top of the falls with a view of the headwaters but does not provide any view of the falls itself. The cliff of the falls faces north so the entires falls does potentially freeze in the winter season. This trail, together with the Skyline Trail, is the most visited of all trails. 

5) The Four Seasons Trail: The Four Seasons trail is a 1.1. mile (1.9 km) long hiking trail. It is a trail where you have to walk the same path back again. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it takes an average of 42 minutes to complete the hike. This is a very popular area for walking. The trail is open all year round and is beautiful to visit at any time. 

6) The Great Woodland Adventure Trail: This trail is specially designed for children. The trail consists of a winding 1.6 kilometer path where forest creatures are spotlighted at 12 Discovery Stations. Grady the Groundhog, the Park’s Animal Educator, illustrates how his forest friends live, including chipmunks, frogs, owls and butterflies. Life-size wooden and metal sculptures made by local craftsmen and artists bring the path to life.

7) Outcroppings Trail: The improved trail takes you up 499 steps to Chimney Rock with beautiful views along the way. Where possible, visit the Gneiss Cave, a natural formation that gets its name from the Henderson Gneiss granite. This cave is often closed due to the activities of many bats. Along the way, you won't want to miss the Grotto, Subway, and Pulpit Rock, popular attractions that reopened in spring 2015. From these viewpoints you will have views of Hickory Nut Gorge, the Carolina Piedmont and Lake Lure.

8) Dirty Dancing: Before you reach the official town of Lake Lure, the Dirty Dancing portion of your tour starts. Although the film is set in the Catskills, it was shot almost entirely on location in and around the lake. Just across from Chimney Rock is the Esmeralda Inn, which now houses the dance floor from Dirty Dancing. The cozy lodge resort is outfitted in stone and natural wood with a huge wood-burning fireplace and rockers on the wraparound porch, as well as the international Prime Restaurant. At the lake, see the area by boat on Lake Lure Tours. The covered boat takes Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey fans around the lake, but non-fans won't be bored with the views. 

9) Last of the Mohicans: Fans of Last of the Mohicans (1992) will want to make sure they hit two trails: the Skyline Trail and the Hickory Nut Falls (the site of the film's climactic battle).

10) Visitor Center: Tip: Ask for a guide to film locations in the park at the visitors center.

De glooiende bergen en kronkelende waterwegen van Hickory Nut Gorge en Lake Lure zijn volledig te zien vanaf het uitkijkpunt op de top. Hier krijgen wandelaars een prachtig uitzicht over een gebied van 120 km.

Hickory Nut Falls maakt deel uit van de Chimney Rock State Park. Het wandelpad naar de waterval is gematigd en loopt door een levendig bos.

Hickory Nut Falls is part of Chimney Rock State Park. The hiking trail to the waterfall is moderate and passes through a vibrant forest.





Hoewel de wandeling niet moeilijk is, zijn er een paar gematigde beklimmingen en soms is het oppervlak behoorlijk rotsachtig (zie film).

Although the walk is not difficult, there are a few moderate climbs and at times the surface is quite rocky (see film).





Hickory Nut Falls is niet alleen een van de hoogste watervallen in deze regio, maar het werd voornamelijk bekend door zijn verschijning in de film The Last of the Mohicans. 

Hickory Nut Falls is not only one of the highest waterfalls in the region, but it was arguably made even more remarkable by its appearance in the film The Last of the Mohicans.





Behalve de wandeling naar de waterval staan er ook b​​​​​orden langs de route die uitleg geven over de ecologie in deze omgeving.

Besides the trail to the waterfall, there are also signs along the route that explain the ecology in this area.





De Lake Lure voetgangers Flowering Bridge verbindt Chinmey Rock village met Lake Lure. Deze unieke plek heeft 15 verschillende tuinen.  

The Lake Lure pedestrian Flowering Bridge connects Chimney Rock village to Lake Lure. This unique place has 15 different gardens.





De tuinen hebben een kruidentuin, vlindertuin en een zangvogeltuin. Een bezoek aan deze brug en tuinen is gratis. 

The gardens have a herb garden, butterfly garden and songbird garden. A visit to this bridge and gardens is free.
