Bezienswaardigheden / Tips 2025:

1) Great Falls Park: Great Falls is een van de meest populaire natuurlijke bestemmingen in het gebied van Washington DC, favoriet bij de lokale bevolking en toeristen van over de hele wereld. Great Falls ligt slechts 30 km vanaf Washington DC. De Potomac-rivier heeft verschillende stroomversnellingen en watervallen. Great Falls Park ligt in de staten Virginia en Maryland. Het mooiste uitzicht op de watervallen is vanuit Virginia. De US National Park Service beheert deze topattractie in Virginia. Ze onderhouden uitstekende faciliteiten, waaronder een interessant bezoekerscentrum, en organiseren evenementen in het park door rangers. Er is een toegangsprijs van $ 20 per auto voor bezoekers die het park binnenrijden. Het park is alleen overdag geopend. 

2) Overlook 1: Dit uitkijkpunt bevindt zich links van de zuidkant van het bezoekerscentrum. Hier kom je het dichtst bij de watervallen. Een kort pad leidt naar een uitkijkplatform. De rest van het uitzicht is rotsachtig en ruw terrein en niet geschikt voor rolstoelen.

3) Overlook 2: Overlook 2 is meer verwijderd van de watervallen, maar biedt een weids uitzicht. Het biedt ook een uitstekend uitzicht op de kant van Maryland. Het grootste deel van de waterval is te zien vanaf dit uitkijkpunt. Overlook 2 is toegankelijk voor gehandicapten en het observatiedek is een vlak platform.

4) Overlook 3: Overlook 3 is een paar honderd meter verder naar het zuiden (voorbij Overlook 2), en gelegen aan een prachtige bocht in de Potomac die leidt naar Mather Gorge. Ook hier is de waterval toegankelijk voor gehandicapten en het observatiedek is een vlak platform.

5) River Trail: Vanaf overlook 3 kun je de River Trail verder volgen. Als je wat avontuurlijk ingesteld bent is deze trail zeker de moeite waard. De trail is 7 km lang en de wandeling duurt ongeveer 2 uur. Dit is ook een zeer populair gebied voor vogelspotten. 

6) Trails: Great Falls heeft 10 uitgezette wandelpaden die bij elkaar 24 km lang zijn. De meest uitgezette trails zijn eenvoudig en makkelijk te bereiken. Op bepaalde trails mag je ook fietsen. 

7) Parkeren: Het park bevat een grote picknickplaats en voldoende parkeergelegenheid voor 600 voertuigen. In de weekenden kan het park erg druk zijn en kunnen alle parkeerplaatsen al vroeg in de ochtend vol raken, waardoor vertragingen en tijdelijke afsluitingen kunnen ontstaan. Bezoek het park dus vroeg. 

8) Kamperen: De US National Park Service staat kamperen in het park niet toe.

9) Toegang tot de rivier: Toegang tot de rivier boven de watervallen vanaf de Virginia kant is illegaal. Ongeveer zeven verdrinkingen vinden er per jaar plaats, waarvan de meeste alcohol gerelateerd zijn, hoewel de consumptie van alcoholische dranken illegaal is in het park.

1) Great Falls Park: Great Falls is one of the most popular natural destinations in the Washington DC area, favorite with locals and tourists from all over the world. Great Falls is only 20 miles (30 km) from Washington DC. The Potomac River has several rapids and waterfalls. Great Falls Park is located in the states Virginia and Maryland. The best view of the falls is from Virginia. The US National Park Service manages this top attraction in Virginia. They maintain excellent facilities, including an interesting visitor centre, and organize ranger-led events in the park. There is a $20 entrance fee per car for visitors driving into the park. The park is only open during the day.

2) Overlook 1: This viewpoint is located to the left of the south side of the visitor center. Here you come closest to the waterfalls. A short path leads to a viewing platform. The rest of the view is rocky and rough terrain and not suitable for wheelchairs.

3) Overlook 2: Overlook 2 is further away from the falls, but offers expansive views. It also offers excellent views of the Maryland side. Most of the waterfall can be seen from this lookout point. Overlook 2 is handicapped accessible and the observation deck is a flat platform.

4) Overlook 3: Overlook 3 is a few hundred yards further south (past Overlook 2), and located on a beautiful bend in the Potomac that leads to Mather Gorge. The waterfall is accessible to the disabled and the observation deck is also a flat platform. 

5) River Trail: From overlook 3 you can continue following the River Trail. If you are adventurous, this trail is definitely worth it. The trail is 3 mile (7 km) long and the walk takes about 2 hours. This is also a very popular area for bird watching. 

6) Trails: Great Falls has 10 marked hiking trails that are 15 miles (24 km) long. The most marked trails are simple and easy to reach. You are also allowed to cycle on some trails.

7) Parking: The park includes a large picnic area and enough parking for 600 vehicles. On weekends the park can be very busy and all parking spaces can fill up early in the morning, causing delays and temporary closures. So visit the park early.

8) Camping: The US National Park Service does not allow camping in the park. 

9) River access: Access to the river above the falls from the Virginia side is illegal. About seven drownings occur each year, most of which are alcohol-related, although the consumption of alcoholic beverages is illegal in the park.

De watervallen zijn in totaal 20 meter (76 feet) over een reeks grote watervallen. De Great Falls zijn geclassificeerd als klasse 5-6 wildwater volgens de internationale schaal van de rivier moeilijkheidsgraad (op de foto en film uitkijk vanaf platform 1).

De eerste kajakker was in 1975, maar pas sinds de vroege jaren in 90s zijn de watervallen een populaire bestemming voor ervaren wildwatervaarders in het DC-gebied (op de foto en film uitkijk vanaf platform 2). 

The first kayaker was in 1975, but it's only since the early 1990s that the falls have been a popular destination for experienced whitewater paddlers in the DC area (pictured and filmed from overlook 2). 





Onder de watervallen, is de rivier geclassificeerd als klasse 2-3 en is een zeer populaire kajak route sinds de jaren '60 (op de foto en film uitkijk vanaf platform 3).

Één keer per jaar stroomt dit gebied over, vanwege verschillende invloeden. In het park kun je zien hoe hoog het water heeft gestaan.

                 Het park bevat ook een grote picknickplaats en voldoende parkeergelegenheid voor 600 voertuigen.

In de Great Falls vind je vele verschillende vogels. De meest voorkomende vogels zijn de kalkoengier en de monninksgier. De monniksgier zijn kleiner (op de foto zwarte gier) en de kalkoengier met zijn rode kop is aanzienlijk groter. 

In the Great Falls you will find many different birds. The most common birds are the turkey vulture and the black vulture. The black vultures are smaller (black vulture in the photo) and the turkey vulture with its red head is considerably larger.
