Bezienswaardigheden / tips Memorial Day 2026:

1) Memorial Day - National Memorial Day Parade: Memorial Day is een Amerikaanse nationale herdenkingsdag waarop militairen worden herdacht die zijn omgekomen tijdens hun dienst. Washington DC is het nationale centrum van herdenkingen. Hier vinden de grootste en meest officiële ceremonies plaats, in aanwezigheid van veteranen, Gold Star Families en vaak ook presidentiële vertegenwoordigers. De bekende National Memorial Day Parade loopt langs Constitution Avenue, de brede centrale straat tussen vele bekende monumenten. Het startpunt is Constitution Avenue NW bij 7th Street NW, hier wordt de Amerikaanse flag gehesen als de parade begint. Hoewel Memorial Day voor veel Amerikanen ook het begin van de zomer betekent, is de sfeer vooral plechtig, respectvol en emotioneel. Het draait niet om het vieren maar om herinneren en eren. Memorial Day wordt elk jaar gehouden op de laatste maandag van mei. In 2026 valt Memorial Day op maandag 25 mei.

2) Rolling to Remember: Rolling to Remember is een jaarlijkse grote motorrit tevens demonstratie die gehouden wordt op de zondag van Memorial Day weekend. Het doel is om de militaire slachtoffers te herdenken en aandacht te vragen voor de POW/MIA gevangen in oorlog en vermisten. Ook wil men meer bewustzijn tonen over de mentale gezondheid en veteranenzorg. Het is de directe opvolger van het vroegere evenement Rolling Thunder. Na 2019 hield Rolling Thunder op onder die naam, maar de traditie leeft voort met Rolling to Remember onder leiding van AMVETS (American Veterans). De rit begint in de Pentagon North Parking Lot waar de motorrijders zich verzamelen em vertrekken rond 12.00 uur. Ook deze motor stoet rijdt over de Constitution Avenue. In 2026 vindt deze motor parade 0p 24 mei plaats.

3) National Memorial Day Concert: Dit is een gratis concert dat jaarlijks op zondagavond voor Memorial Day gehouden wordt op de West Lawn van het Amerikaanse Capitool (24 mei, 2026). Het concert eert de Amerikaanse militairen, veteranen en families met muziek, orkest (zoals de National Symphony Orchestra) en optredens. De hekken openen meestal rond 17.00 uur en de muziek begint rond 20.00 uur. Het is gratis en openbaar toegankelijk, je hebt geen tickets nodig, maar er zijn veiligheidscontroles zoals bij andere grote evenementen in D.C. Er is soms ook een generale repetitie de avond ervoor (zaterdagavond) die ook open kan zijn voor publiek voor Memorial Day zelf. Het concert wordt vaak gepresenteerd door bekende Amerikanen zoals Joe Mantegna en Gary Sinise (die ook tijdens de parade aanwezig zijn). die verhalen en tributes afwisselen met muziek.

4) Arlington National Cemetery: De kranslegging bij het graf van de Onbekende Soldaat. De president of vicepresident legt een krans bij het Graf van de Onbekende Soldaat. Dit is de officiële nationale ceremonie van de VS om gesneuvelde militairen te eren. De opening en militaire ceremonie begint ongeveer rond 09.00 uur. De Kranslegging meestal tussen 09.30 en 10.00 uur. De volledige ceremonie duurt ongeveer 30-45 minuten dit is inclusief de militaire eerbewijzen, vlagceremonie en het spelen van Taps (plechtig trompetsignaal). Tip: Voor een goede plek bij het graf is het aan te raden minstens een uur van te voren aanweig te zijn, want de locatie is populair en vaak druk tijdens Memorial Day.

5) Memorial Day Observance at The Wall: De officiële naam van het herdenkingsprogramma bij het Vietnam Veterans Memorial op Memorial Day heet "Memorial Day Observance at The Wall". Dit is de naam die de Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) als titel gebruikt voor de jaarlijkse ceremonie op 25 mei 2026 bij het Vietnam Veterans Memorial (ook wel The Wall genoemd). De officiële ceremonie begint meestal rond 13.00 uur (let op kan per jaar wijzigigen) en duurt ongeveer een uur. Er worden toespraken gegeven door veteranen, militaire vertegenwoordigers of gastsprekers als eerbetoon aan gesneuvelde militairen. Ook vindt er hier een trompetsolo van "Taps" plaats en is er een kranslegging bij de muur. Er is een minuut stilte en de ceremonie is sober en respectvol. Veel veteranen en familieleden leggen hier foto's, bloemen of brieven neer. Ook overwrijven familieleden en makkers de naam (name rubbing) op de muur van hun gevallen kameraden en gezinsleden. 

Highlights / tips Memorial Day 2026:

1) Memorial Day - National Memorial Day Parade: Memorial Day is an American national day of remembrance commemorating military personnel who died in the line of duty. Washington, D.C., is the national center of remembrance. This is where the largest and most official ceremonies take place, attended by veterans, Gold Star Families, and often presidential representatives. The famous National Memorial Day Parade runs along Constitution Avenue, the wide central street between many well-known monuments. The starting point is Constitution Avenue NW at 7th Street NW, where the American flag is raised as the parade begins. Although Memorial Day also marks the beginning of summer for many Americans, the atmosphere is primarily solemn, respectful, and emotional. It's not about celebration, but about remembrance and honor. Memorial Day is held annually on the last Monday of May. In 2026, Memorial Day falls on Monday, May 25th. 

2) Rolling to Remember: Rolling to Remember is an annual large motorcycle ride and demonstration held on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. The goal is to commemorate the military victims and to draw attention to the POW/MIA captured in war and missing in action. They also want to raise awareness of mental health and veteran care. It is the direct successor to the former event Rolling Thunder. After 2019, Rolling Thunder ceased to exist under that name, but the tradition lives on with Rolling to Remember, led by AMVETS (American Veterans). The ride begins in the Pentagon North Parking Lot where the motorcyclists gather and depart around 12:00 noon. This motorcycle procession also rides along Constitution Avenue. In 2026, this motorcycle parade will take place on May 24th. 

3) National Memorial Day Concert: This free concert is held annually on the Sunday evening before Memorial Day on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol (May 24, 2026). The concert honors U.S. military personnel, veterans, and families with music, orchestra (such as the National Symphony Orchestra), and performances. Gates usually open around 5:00 PM, and the music begins around 8:00 PM. It's free and open to the public; no tickets are required, but there are security checks, as with other major D.C. events. There is sometimes a dress rehearsal the night before (Saturday evening), which may also be open to the public for Memorial Day itself. The concert is often presented by well-known Americans like Joe Mantegna and Gary Sinise (who are also present during the parade), who intersperse stories and tributes with music.

4) Arlington National Cemetery: The Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The President or Vice President lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. This is the official national ceremony of the United States to honor fallen soldiers. The opening ceremony and military ceremony begin approximately 9:00 AM. The Wreath Laying Ceremony usually takes place between 9:30 and 10:00 AM. The entire ceremony lasts approximately 30-45 minutes and includes the military honors, the flag ceremony, and the playing of Taps (a solemn trumpet call). Tip: To secure a good spot at the Tomb, it is recommended to arrive at least an hour in advance, as the location is popular and often crowded on Memorial Day. 

5) Memorial Day Observance at the Wall: The official name of the commemoration program at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Memorial Day is "Memorial Day Observance at The Wall." This is the name the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) uses for the annual ceremony on May 25, 2026, at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (also known as The Wall). The official ceremony usually begins around 1:00 PM (note: this may change annually) and lasts about an hour. Speeches are given by veterans, military representatives, or guest speakers to honor fallen soldiers. There will also be a trumpet solo of "Taps" and a wreath-laying ceremony at the wall. There will be a minute's silence, and the ceremony will be sober and respectful. Many veterans and family members place photos, flowers, or letters here. Relatives and comrades also rub the names of their fallen comrades and family members on the wall.

Tijdens het Rolling to Remember evenement rijden er ook trucks mee. Ondanks deze trucks meerijden zijn het meestal support voertuigen/trailers voor awareness campagnes, dus geen onderdeel van het motor evenement. Desondanks zijn het prachtige voertuigen met kunstwerken, vlaggen, veteranen teksten of tribuut schilderingen erop.

Trucks will also be participating in the Rolling to Remember event. Although these trucks are participating, they are usually support vehicles/trailers for awareness campaigns, not part of the motorcycle event. Nevertheless, they are beautiful vehicles adorned with artwork, flags, veteran texts, or tribute paintings.

Gary Sinise (bekend als Mac Taylor in CSI: NY) is vaak aanwezig bij Memorial Day activiteiten in Washington D.C. omdat hij zich al decennialang intens inzet voor Amerikaanse militairen, veteranen en hun families. Hij richtte de Gary Sinise Foundation op die gewonde veteranen, first responders en Gold Star families ondersteunt (bijvoorbeeld met aangepaste woningen en hulp bij revalidatie).

Gary Sinise (known as Mac Taylor on CSI: NY) is a frequent participant in Memorial Day activities in Washington, D.C., as he has dedicated decades of his life to supporting American military personnel, veterans, and their families. He founded the Gary Sinise Foundation, which supports wounded veterans, first responders, and Gold Star families (for example, with adapted housing and rehabilitation assistance.





De ouderwetse paard en wagen met president Lincoln, daarachter de TAPS staat voor Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors. Het is een non profit organisatie die ondersteuning biedt aan families van militairen die zijn overleden tijdens actieve dienst zijn overleden.

                           Veteranen van Operation Desert Storm zijn ook vaak aanwezig tijdens Memorial Day.

Bij de Vietnam Veterans Memorial worden speeches gehouden en kransen gelegd. Hier vind je vele Vietnam veteranen omdat de Vietnam oorlog nog steeds erg leeft en omdat de Vietnam oorlog van 1 november 1955 tot 30 april 1975 duurde. Degene die het overleefd hebben zijn nog steeds in leven.
