Bezienswaardigheden / tips Rockport 2025:

1) Rockport: Rockport ligt ongeveer 64 km ten noordoosten van Boston, op het puntje van het schiereiland Cape Ann. Rockport is een favoriete vakantieplek en dagtocht voor velen die willen genieten van deze vissersstad. De stad Rockport werd opgericht in 1840 nadat de eerste granietgroeven waren ontwikkeld. Rockport-graniet werd langs de hele oostkust verscheept, vooral tijdens de industriële revolutie. Nadat de vraag naar graniet afnam, bloeide Rockport op als kunstenaarskolonie vanwege de rotsachtige stranden, schilderachtige vissershutten en kleurrijke vissersboten. Parkeren in Rockport is wel een probleem. Het centrum heeft parkeermeters maar het is vaak vol. Rockport heeft een gratis parkeergelegenheid (199 plaatsen), de Blue Gate Parking Lot (geopend juni-oktober). Vanaf hier is het 25 minuten lopen naar Bearskin Neck maar je kunt ook de Rockport Shuttle Service nemen voor $ 1.00 vanaf de parkeerplaats (5 Blue Gate Lane). 

2) Bearskin Neck: Bearskin Neck is een kleine landtong die uit het stadscentrum uitsteekt in de haven van Rockport, en die volgens de legende de thuisbasis was van beren tijdens de koloniale tijd. De visserij- en granietindustrie van Rockport maakte het tot een druk commercieel havengebied. Tegenwoordig biedt de steiger op het puntje van deze kleine landtong een mooi uitzicht op de baai en de stad Rockport. Wat Bearskin Neck echter zo populair maakt, zijn de schilderachtige kleine studio's, winkels en restaurants langs de smalle straatjes van deze bruisende kunstenaarskolonie. 

3) Motif # 1: Motief nr. 1, gelegen aan Bradley Wharf in Rockport, is een vissershut die bekend staat als een van de meest geschilderde gebouwen in Amerika. Gebouwd in de jaren 1840 toen Rockport de thuisbasis werd van een kolonie kunstenaars en vissers, werd de hut een favoriet onderwerp van schilders vanwege de samenstelling en verlichting van de locatie, en ook als een symbool van het maritieme leven in New England. In de jaren 1930 gebruikte schilder John Buckley de keet als zijn atelier. Hij verkocht het in 1945 aan de stad. Hoewel het oorspronkelijke gebouw verloren is gegaan in de sneeuwstorm van 1978, wordt gezegd dat deze voormalige vissershut het meest geschilderde gebouw van het land is.

4) Front Beach: Front Beach is een strand aan Sandy Bay en ligt op loopafstand van Rockport. Het is het meest bezochte strand in Rockport en in het hoogseizoen zijn er badmeesters. Het ligt in de buurt van een aantal hotels, restaurants, eetgelegenheden en winkels waar je tijdens je stranddag lekker kunt eten of winkelen. 

5) Halibut Point State Park: Op 8 minuten rijden (4,5 km) vanaf Rockport ligt Halibut Point State Park. Halibut Point State Park is een beschermd land aan de oceaan op Cape Ann. Het graniet waaruit Halibut Point bestaat, wordt geschat op 440 miljoen jaar oud. Al in 1840 werd het hier ontgonnen. Vandaag de dag staat er een bezoekerscentrum met een klein museum en zijn er wandelpaden uitgezet langs de granietgroeve en de oceaan. Highlights / tips Rockport 2025: 

1) Rockport: Rockport is located approximately 40 miles (64 km) northeast of Boston, at the tip of the Cape Ann Peninsula. Rockport is a favorite vacation spot and day trip for many who want to enjoy this fishing town. The city of Rockport was founded in 1840 after the first granite quarries were developed. Rockport granite was shipped all along the East Coast, especially during the Industrial Revolution. After the demand for granite declined, Rockport flourished as an artist colony because of its rocky beaches, quaint fishing huts, and colorful fishing boats. Parking in Rockport is a problem. The center has parking meters but it is often full. Rockport has a free parking lot (199 spaces), the Blue Gate Parking Lot (open June-October). From here it is a 25 minute walk to Bearskin Neck but you can also take the Rockport Shuttle Service for $1.00 from the parking lot (5 Blue Gate Lane).   

2) Bearskin Neck: Bearskin Neck is a small spit of land that juts out into Rockport Harbor from the city center, and according to legend was home to bears during colonial times. Rockport's fishing and granite industries made it a busy commercial port area. Today, the jetty at the tip of this small headland offers a beautiful view of the bay and the town of Rockport. What makes Bearskin Neck so popular, are the quaint little studios, shops and restaurants that line the narrow streets of this bustling artist colony. 

3) Motif # 1: Motif #1, located on Bradley Wharf in Rockport, is a fishing shack that is known as one of the most painted buildings in America. Built in the 1840s when Rockport became home to a colony of artists and fishermen, the cabin became a favorite subject of painters for its composition and lighting, and also as a symbol of New England maritime life. In the 1930s, painter John Buckley used the shack as his studio. He sold it to the city in 1945. Although the original building was lost in the 1978 snowstorm, this former fishing hut is said to be the most painted building in the country. 

4) Front Beach: Front Beach is a beach on Sandy Bay and is within walking distance of Rockport. It is the most visited beach in Rockport and has lifeguards during the high season. It is located near a number of hotels, restaurants, eateries and shops where you can enjoy a meal or shop during your day at the beach. 

5) Halibut Point State Park: Halibut Point State Park is an 8 minute drive (2.8 miles) from Rockport. is. Halibut Point State Park is a protected oceanfront land on Cape Ann. The granite that comprises Halibut Point is estimated to be 440 million years old. It was mined here as early as 1840. Today there is a visitor center with a small museum and hiking trails along the granite quarry and the ocean. Rockport is een idyllisch, aan drie kanten door de zee omgeven plaatsje. Deze schilderachtige vissershaven ligt op 8 km ten noorden van Gloucester en verken je het best te voet (zie film).

                 Rockport, ooit beroemd om de productie van graniet, begon eind 1800 als kunstenaarskolonie.

Het is niet verwonderlijk dat het zich al tientallen jaren geleden ontwikkelde tot een vissersplaats met de ambities van een kunstenaarskolonie, vooral omdat de overbevissing geleidelijk aan een steeds grotere bedreiging ging vormen voor de traditionele broodwinning (zie film).

Tegenwoordig is Rockport in de eerste plaats een woon- en toeristenstad in de voorsteden, maar het is nog steeds de thuisbasis van een aantal kreeftenvissers en kunstenaars.

Today, Rockport is primarily a suburban residential and tourist town, but it is still home to a number of lobster fishermen and artists.



Aan Bearskin Neck staat een beroemd oud rood vishuis dat bekend staat als Motif #1, waarvan wordt gezegd dat het het meest geschilderde gebouw van Amerika is.

Je loopt door straatjes met veel bloemen en voormalige vissershuizen van hout waarin nu kustgalerieën, winkeltjes met ambachtelijke producten en restaurants zijn ondergebracht.

You walk through streets with lots of flowers and former wooden fishermen's houses that now house coastal galleries, shops with craft products and restaurants.

Rond 1600 werd Rockport opgericht op basis van visserij en zijn granietgroeven. Door de geografische vorm en gemak was Bearskin Neck een commerciële haven voor vele industrieën, een factor in de economische groei van de stad (zie film).

Vandaag de dag zijn de rotsachtige stranden en parken aan zee een favoriete plek voor toeristen uit onder andere de Greater Boston Area en Rhode Island (zie film).
