Bezienswaardigheden / tips Salem 2025:

1) Salem: Salem werd in 1626 gesticht door Roger Conant. De herinnering aan deze periode wordt echter overschaduwd door de heksenjachten van 1692, die leidden tot de executie van 20 onschuldige mensen. In het jaar 1692 was Salem Village het toneel van een van de beruchtste en best gedocumenteerde heksenprocessen uit de geschiedenis. De heksenwaan begon in de pastorie van Salem Village, destijds de woning van dominee Samuel Parris en zijn gezin. Hier luisterde het negenjarige dochtertje van de dominee, Betty, haar nichtje van elf, Abigail Williams, en enkele dorpsmeisjes naar de verhalen over hekserij en voodoo, verteld door Tituba, een slavinnetje uit West-Indië dat als dienstmeisje bij de Parris familie inwoonde. Al snel begonnen de gemakkelijk te beïnvloeden meisjes vreemde, hysterische gedragingen te vertonen. De 'bezeten' meisjes beschuldigden hun buren van hekserij. Geleidelijk verspreidde de heksenwaan zich door de streng godsdienstige gemeenschap. Dit leidde tot officiële processen: niet minder dan twintig mannen en vrouwen werden op beschuldiging van hekserij aan de galg geknoopt. 

2) Salem Witch Museum: Salems meest bezochte bezienswaardigheid herinnert aan zijn donkere periode. In 1692 werden 150 mensen gevangen gezet van wie er 20 werden geëxecuteerd na beschuldigd te zijn van hekserij. Het museum vormt een impliciete waarschuwing voor dergelijke waandenkbeelden. De ticket prijs per volwassen is $ 17,50 en kinderen betalen slechts $ 14,50. Kijk voor de openingstijden op de website. Dit kan nog wel eens verschillen in de zomer en winter maanden.
 
3) Old Burying Point Cemetery: Een bezoekje aan de Old Burying Point Cemetery is ook zeker de moeite waard. Deze begraafplaats bevat de graven van de eerste pelgrims die hier met de Mayflower aankwamen en John Hathorne de  rechter tijdens de heksen proces. De geschiedenis is hier duidelijk zichtbaar en geeft je het gevoel alsof je terug in de tijd gaat.

4) Salem Witch Trials Memorial: Dit gedenkteken naast het kerkhof biedt een plek om de tragische gebeurtenissen uit het verleden van Salem te overpeinzen. Het werd gewijd door Nobelprijswinnaar Elie Wiesel in 1992, precies 300 jaar na de heksenprocessen. 
 
5) Peabody Essex Museum: Een interessant museum is het Peabody Essex Museum (East India Square). Dit museum heeft een collectie van meer dan 2,4 miljoen voorwerpen waaronder een van 's werelds grootste Aziatische kunstcollecties en schatten uit het Verre Oosten, Oceanië en Afrika meegebracht door kapiteins uit Salem. Je ziet er sieraden, porseleinen beeldjes, rituele kostuums, ivoorwerk, boegbeelden en navigatie instrumenten.

6) House of Seven Gables: Fans van schrijver Nathaniel Hawthorne kunnen een bedevaart maken naar zijn huis uit 1668. De in Salem geboren schrijver was zo ingenomen met zijn huis in koloniale stijl dat hij het gebruikte als plaats van handeling voor zijn roman House of Seven gables (1851). Naast de beroemde zeven steile gevelpunten heeft het huis ook een geheime trap. Het terrein omvat ook andere oude huizen, waaronder het geboortehuis van Hawthorne, een 18de-eeuws huis dat in 1958 verplaatst is uit Union Street. 

7) Salem Maritime National Historical Site: Hier vindt je de gerestaureerde overblijfselen van wat ooit de haven van Salem was. Van de vijftig oorspronkelijke kaaien blijft vandaag alleen nog Derby Wharf over. Verder vindt je hier koopmanshuizen, opslagplaatsen, magazijnen en douaneposten. Ook kun je de reconstructie van de Friendship, een driemaster van de East India Maritime Company die in 1812 door de Engelsen werd gekaapt bekijken. De openingstijden variëren per seizoen. 

8) Beste reistijd: Eind juli voor de Marblehead Race Week. Begin september voor de Labor Day Regatta. De hele maand oktober wordt er uitgebreid Halloween gevierd onder de titel Haunted Happenings, zoals pompoenen uitsnijden, parades en een gekostumeerd bal. De Halloween finale is op 31 oktober.



Highlights / tips Salem 2025:

1) Salem: Salem was founded in 1626 by Roger Conant. The memory of this period, is overshadowed by the witch hunts of 1692, which led to the execution of 20 innocent people. In the year 1692 Salem Village was the scene of one of the most notorious and best documented witch trails in history. The witch delusion began in the rectory of Salem Village, which was the home of Reverend Samuel Parris and his family. The nine-year-old daughter of the pastor, Betty, her niece of eleven Abigail Williams and some village girls listened to the stories about witchcraft and voodoo told by Tituba, a slave girl from West Indies which was living as a maid at the Parris family. Soon,the easily influenced girls began to show strange hysterical behavior. The ' possessed ' girls accused their neighbors of witchcraft. Gradually, the witches paranoia spread by the strict religious community. This led to the official processes: no less than twenty men and women were tied to the gallows on charges of witchcraft.

2) Salem Witch Museum: Salems most visited attraction recalls his dark period. In 1692, 150 people were put in prison of whom 20 were executed after being accused of witchcraft. The museum is an implicit warning for such delusions. The ticket price is $ 17,50 per adult and children pay only $ 14.50. For the opening hours view the website. 3) Old Burying Point Cemetery: A visit to the Old Burying Point Cemetery is well worth it. This cemetery contains the graves of the very first pilgrims who came on the Mayflower and John Hathorne who was a Judge at the witch trials. History is clearly visible and makes you feel that you are going back in time.

4) Salem Witch Trials Memorial: This memorial next to the cemetery offers a place to contemplate the tragic events of the past in Salem. It was dedicated by Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel in 1992, exactly 300 years after the witch trials.
 
5) Peabody Essex Museum: An interesting museum is the Peabody Essex Museum (East India Square). This museum has a collection of more than 2.4 million items including one of the world's leading Asian art collections and treasures from the Far East, Oceania and Africa brought by masters of vessels from Salem. You will find jewelry, porcelain figurines, ritual costumes, ivory work, figureheads and navigation instruments.

6) House of Seven Gables: Fans of author Nathaniel Hawthorne can make a pilgrimage to his home in 1668. The Salem-born writer was so pleased with his colonial house that he used it as a venue for his novel House of Seven gables (1851). Besides the famous seven steep gables, the house has a secret stairway. The site also includes other old houses, including the birthplace of Hawthorne, a 18th century house that was moved in 1958 from Union Street. 

7) Salem Maritime National Historical Site: Here you'll find the restored remains of what was once the port of Salem. Today, only the Derby Wharf is still original of the fifty quays. Furthermore, you will find merchant houses, stores, warehouses and customs posts here. Also, you can see the reconstruction of the Friendship a three-master of the East India Company that was hijacked by the English in 1812. Opening times vary seasonally. 

8) Best time to travel: End of July for the Marblehead Race Week. Early September for the Labor Day Regatta and October for Halloween. The entire month of October, Halloween is celebrated under the title Haunted Happenings, such as cutting pumpkins, parades and a costumed ball. The Halloween final is on October 31st.

De Salem Common ligt tegenover het  Salem Witch Museum en in het hart van de stad en is een ruim 9 hectare groot open park in het Salem Common Historic District. Het is het oudste park van Salem en is opgericht in 1803.

Located across from the Salem Witch Museum and in the heart of the city, Salem Common is a 20-acre open park in the Salem Common Historic District. It is Salem's oldest park and was founded in 1803.





Vanaf het Salem Witch Museum is het slechts 5 minuten lopen naar het bekende Essex Street. Essex Street loopt al sinds de zeventiende eeuw door het centrum van Salem (zie film).

From the Salem Witch Museum, it is just a 5-minute walk to the famous Essex Street. Essex Street has run through downtown Salem since the seventeenth century (see film). 



Aan de voorkant van Essex Street staan bouwwerken uit zeventiende, achttiende, negentiende en twintigste eeuw maar is helaas getransformeerd in een voetgangerswinkelcentrum in de jaren 70.  

The front of Essex Street is lined with buildings dating from the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but unfortunately it is transformed into a pedestrian shopping center in the 1970s.



Het Samuel Pickman huis is gelegen aan Charter Street 43 en werd in 1665 gebouwd door Samuel Pickman. Pickman was een zeeman, net als de meerderheid van de bevolking van Salem in die tijd. Het huis ligt naast het Burying Point.

The Samuel Pickman House is located at 53 Charter Street and was built in 1665 by Samuel Pickman. Pickman was a sailor, as were the majority of Salem's population at that time. The house is located next to Burying Point. 





Het Grimshawe huis gelegen op 53 Charter Street ligt naast het Old Burying Point dat bijna lijkt alsof het deel uitmaakt van het kerkhof. Het is genoemd naar een postuum gepubliceerd verhaal van Nathaniel Hawthorne, Dr. Grimshawe's Secret. Tegenwoordig is het huis in particulier bezit en is het opgenomen in het National Register of Historic Places.

The Grimshawe House located at 53 Charter Street is next to the Old Burying Point which almost looks like it is part of the cemetery. It is named after a posthumously published story by Nathaniel Hawthorne, Dr. Grimshaew's Secret.  Today the house is privately owned and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.     

 
           
                                                 
De Burying Point is het oudste begraafplaats in de stad van Salem. Hier ligt John Hathorne van Justitie, een voorouder van Nathaniel Hawthorne en een van de rechters van het Heksen proces begraven.

De Salem Maritime National Historic Site is een National Historic Site die bestaat uit 12 historische bouwwerken, een replica van de friendschip een reconstructie van een East Indiamanzeilschip gebouwd in 1797 en ongeveer 9 acres (36.000 m2) land langs de waterkant van de haven van Salem. Salem Maritime is de eerste National Historic Site die in de VS is opgericht (17 maart 1938). Het interpreteert de Driehoekshandel tijdens de koloniale periode, in katoen, rum, suiker en slaven. Tijdens de gloriedagen van Salem werd de haven bediend door zo'n 50 werven. Nu omvat dit complex drie werven, waaronder de 640 m lange Derby Wharf.

The Salem Maritime National Historic Site is a National Historic Site consisting of 12 historic buildings, a replica of the Friendship, a reconstruction of an East Indiaman sailing ship built in 1797, and approximately 9 acres (36,000 m2) of land along the waterfront of Salem Harbor. Salem Maritime is the first National Historic Site established in the United States (March 17,1938). It interprets the Triangle trade during the colonial period, in cotton, rum, sugar and slaves. During Salem's glory days, the harbor was served by 50 Wharves. Today, this complex includes three wharves, including the 640 m long Derby Wharf.



De Custom House gebouwd in 1819 is het 13e douanekantoor. De eerste werd gebouwd in 1649 en hier werden belastingen geheven op geïmporteerde ladingen die via de haven binnen kwamen.

De Hawkes House is ontworpen door de beroemde architect Samuel McIntire uit Salem, de bouw begon in 1780. Het onvoltooide gebouw werd rond 1800 gekocht en voltooid door Benjamin Hawkes.

Het Narbonne huis werd in 1675 gebouwd voor slager Thomas Ives. Het is een voorbeeld van een middenklasse gezinswoning uit de 17e en 18e eeuw.

Het House of the Seven Gables is een koloniaal herenhuis uit 1668 genoemd naar zijn gevels. Het werd beroemd door Nathaniel Hawthorne's roman The House of the Seven Gables uit 1851.

Penn Townsends huis werd in 1771 gebouwd voor de zeeman en ligt aan de overkant van de straat van The House of the Seven Gables.

Penn Townsend's house was built for the Mariner in 1771 and is across the street from The House of the Seven Gables. 





Salem is een hele leuke plaats om te bezoeken. Het heeft heel veel geschiedenis, is een mooie stad en hier vind je gezellige restaurants met terrassen.

Salem is a very nice place to visit.
