Bezienswaardigheden / tips Soho, little Italy 2025: 

1) Soho: De buurt SoHo (South of Houston) die tussen Sixth Avenue in het westen en Lafayette Street in het oosten tot Canal Street loopt was in de 19e eeuw een industriegebied. SoHo dreigde in de jaren 60 te worden gesloopt. Voorstanders van het behoud van de buurt vestigden echter de aandacht op de historische gietijzeren gevels die het aanzien van de buurt bepalen. De sloop ging gelukkig niet door en de de kunstenaars namen de wijk in bezit. Op dit moment is het een levendige wijk met veel galeries, cafés, winkels en boetieks.

2) Mercer Street 105: Het kleine, onschuldig ogende huis op Mercer Street 105 heeft een opvallende geschiedenis. Een jaar nadat het in 1831 werd gebouwd, werd het een van SoHo's meest succesvolle bordelen. Je kunt je nauwelijks voorstellen dat SoHo destijds de rosse buurt van de stad was. Hier werden alleen de meest kieskeurige klanten bediend. Niet open voor publiek!

3) Green Street 72-76: In Greene Street staan een aantal van SoHo's mooiste gietijzeren gebouwen en de nummers 72-76 zijn op dat gebied het hoogtepunt. Doe een stap achteruit om de prachtige hoge ramen en de Korinthische zuilen te bekijken van wat ooit werd gebouwd als pakhuis.

4) New York City Fire Museum: Het brandweer museum is gevestigd in een gerenoveerde brandweerkazerne uit 1904. Er is een indrukwekkende collectie vuurgerelateerde kunst en voorwerpen te zien. Daarnaast is er een gedenkteken voor de slachtoffers van 11 september met foto's van de omgekomen brandweermannen. Het adres is 278 Spring Street en het museum is open van woensdag t/m zondag van 10.00 tot 17.00 uur. Een ticket kost $ 15,00 per volwassen. 

5) Little Italy: Van Little Italy is helaas niet meer over dan een toeristische straat. Dit deel van Mulberry Street is het laatste overblijfsel van de Italiaanse gemeenschap die daar vroeger woonde. De restaurants zijn over het algemeen middelmatig en veel te duur. Toch is dit gedeelte zeker de moeite waard om te bekijken. 

6) Feast of San Gennaro: Het feest van San Gennaro, ook bekend als het San Gennaro festival, is een Napolitaans en Italiaans-Amerikaans patronaal festival gewijd aan Sint Januarius een heilige van Napels en Little Italy. Het festival werd voor het eerst gevierd in Little Italy in september 1926, toen immigranten uit Napels samenkwamen in Mulberry Street om de traditie voort te zetten die ze in Italië vierde. Het feest duurt 11 dagen en start altijd vanaf medio september. Er wordt dan voldoende gegeten en gedronken. Het is een enorme belevenis om het feest bij te wonen. Tip: Tijdens het festival kun je alleen contant betalen. 

7) Mulberry Street Bar: Bezoek de Mulberry Street Bar op 176 Mulberry Street. Deze oude bar is de film locatie van de Sopranos, Donnie Brasco en Law and Order. Op het moment als je de bar binnenloopt herken je direct de filmscenés. Een bezoek aan deze bar mag je niet overslaan als je in Little Italy bent. 



Highlights / tips Soho, Little Italy 2025:

1) Soho: The neighborhood SoHo (South of Houston) runs between Sixth Avenue in the west and Lafayette Street in the east to Canal Street and was in the 19th century an industrial area. SoHo threatened to be demolished in the 1960s. However, proponents of preserving the neighborhood drew attention to the historic cast-iron facades that determine the appearance of the area. The demolition was canceled and the artists took the neighborhood in possession. At present it is a lively area with many galleries, cafes, shops and boutiques.

2) Mercer Street 105: The small, innocent-looking house at 105 Mercer Street has a distinguished history. A year after it was built in 1831, it became one of SoHo's most successful whorehouse. Only the pickiets customers were served here. Not open to public!

3) Green Street 72-76: Greene Street is home to some of SoHo's finest cast-iron buildings, and numbers 72-76 are the highlights of that area. Step back to view the beautiful tall windows and Corinthian columns of what was once built as a warehouse.

4) New York City Fire Museum: The fire museum is located in a renovated fire station from 1904. There is an impressive collection of fire-related art and objects to see. There is also a memorial to the victims of September 11 with photos of the killed firefighters. The address is 278 Spring Street and the museum is open from Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A ticket costs $ 15.00 per adult. 

5) Little Italy: Unfortunately, Little Italy is no more than a touristic street. This part of Mulberry Street is the last remnant of the Italian community that used to live there. The restaurants are generally average and way overpriced. Still, this part of the city is definitely worth a visit. 

6) Feast of San Gennaro: The Feast of San Gennaro, also known as the San Gennaro festival, is a Neapolitan and Italian-American patronal festival dedicated to Saint Januarius a saint of Naples and Little Italy. The festival was first celebrated in Little Italy in September 1926, when immigrants from Naples gathered on Mulberry Street to continue the tradition thet celebrated in Italy. The party lasts 11 days and always starts from mid-September. There is then enough food and drinks. It is a great experience to attend this festival. Tip: During the festival you can only pay cash.

7) Mulberry Street Bar: Visit the Mulberry Street Bar at 176 Mulberry Street. This old bar is the movie location of the Sopranos, Donnie Brasco and Law and Order. The moment you walk into the bar you immediately recognize the movie scenes. A visit to this bar is a must when you are in Little Italy.

SoHo, de buurt South of Houston die tussen Sixth Avenue in het westen en Lafayette Street in het oosten tot Canal Street loopt was in de 19e eeuw een industriegebied. De mode industrie trok begin 20e eeuw uptown waardoor de buurt leegliep.

SoHo, the South of Houston neighborhood that runs between Sixth Avenue in the west and Lafayette Street in the east to Canal Street, was an industrial area in the 19th century. In the early 20th century, the fashion industry moved uptown, leaving the neighborhood empty.





De ontwikkeling stopte; er werd niets meer gebouwd maar ook niets gesloopt. De huren daalden sterk en dat trok kunstenaars op zoek naar goedkope atelierruimte en woonruimte aan. 

Development stopped; nothing was built, but nothing was demolished either. Rents fell sharply, attracting artists in search of cheap studio space and living space.  

                

             
Daarna kwamen de monumentenzorgers. Alleen al aan Greene Street staan nog vijftig gebouwen van gietijzer.

Then came the monument keepers. There are still fifty cast iron buildings on Green Street alone.                    



In de jaren zeventig raakte SoHo in trek; de huren stegen en sommige kunstenaars moesten vertrekken. Veel galeries zijn echter gebleven en floreren goed. In welk seizoen je ook komt, de straten van SoHo bieden het ultieme New York gevoel. 

In the 1970s, SoHo became popular; rents went up and some artists had to leave. However, many galleries have remained and flourishing. No matter what season you come, the streets of SoHo offer the ultimate New York feeling.

                                                                                                          LITTLE ITALY





Little Italy is een wijk in de Lower East Side. De bekendste straat is de kleurrijke Mulberry Street waar je de sfeer van Italie nog kunt proeven. Little Italy was ooit de overbevolkte bestemming van Italiaanse immigranten die via Ellis Island binnenkwamen. Helaas wonen hier nog ongeveer 5000 Italianen omdat Chinatown een deel van Little Italy heeft opgeslokt. Nolita, ten noorden van little Italy telt veel boetieks, winkels en cafés.

Little Italy is a neighborhood in the Lower East Side. The famous street is the colorful Mulberry Street where you can still taste the atmosphere of Italy. Little Italy was once the overcrowded destination ot Italian immigrants entering through Ellis Island. Unfortunately, here, there are living about 5000 Italians because Chinatown has swallowed a part of Little Italy. Nolita, north of little Italy has many boutiques, shops and cafes.





Het begon in september 1926 met de nieuw komst van immigranten uit Napels. De Italiaanse immigranten verzamelden zich in Mulberry Street in Manhattan's Little Italy. Er zijn nog maar enkele blokken over van de vriendelijke, feestelijke buurt vol Italiaanse restaurants en winkels. Mulberry straat en een gedeelte van Mott straat is het hart van deze Italiaanse wijk. 

It began in September, 1926 with the newly arrival of immigrants from Naples. The Italian immigrants congregated along Mulberry Street in Manhattan's Little Italy. Mulberry Street and some of Mott Street are mostly the heart of this Italian section.





Afstammelingen van de immigranten vieren er nog altijd familiefeesten. Half September wordt in Mulberry straat in het gedeelte tussen Canal straat en Spring Straat het feest van San Gennaro gevierd, de beschermheilige van Napels. (zie film). 

Descendants of the immigrants still celebrate family events. From half September, they celebrated the Feast of San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples in Mulberry Street between Canal Street and Spring Street. (see film). 





Het is een leuk feest met kleurige lichtjes en kraampjes, maar wel extreem druk. Tijdens het festival loopt er een Italiaanse-Amerikaanse band die bekende muziek spelen waaronder uit de bekende film Rocky. 

It's a fun party with colorful lights and colic, but extremely busy. During the festival, an Italian-American band plays well-know music, including from the famous movie Rocky.



De Mulberry street bar in Little Italy staat bekend om de scenes uit de maffia film Donnie Brasco en de serie de Sopranos. Helaas waren ze de bar aan het renoveren waardoor de orginele staat verloren gaat. 

The Mulberry Street Bar in Little Italy is famous for its scenes from the movie Donnie Brasco and the mafia series The Sopranos. Unfortunately they were renovating the bar to which the original state is lost.
