Bezienswaardigheden / tips Bristol 2026:

1) Bristol: Bristol, Tennessee–Virginia is een bijzondere tweelingstad. De stad ligt precies op de grens van Tennessee en Virginia: het zuidelijke deel heet Bristol, Tennessee en het noordelijke deel Bristol, Virginia. De beroemde State Street loopt dwars door het centrum en vormt de staatsgrens. Bristol ontstond in de 19e eeuw als handelsplaats in de Appalachen. Door de ligging tussen de twee staten groeiden de twee stadsdelen samen uit tot één gemeenschap met een gedeelde geschiedenis, economie en cultuur. Daarom wordt Bristol vaak de "Twin City" genoemd. De grootste bekendheid van Bristol komt uit de muziekgeschiedenis. In 1927 vonden hier de beroemde Bristol Sessions plaats, waarbij platenproducent Ralph Peer muzikanten uit de Appalachen opnam. Tijdens deze sessies werden onder andere de eerste belangrijke opnamen gemaakt van The Carter Family en Jimmie Rodgers. Deze opnamen hadden grote invloed op de ontwikkeling van countrymuziek. 3) State Street: State Street is de beroemdste straat van Bristol en vormt het historische hart van de unieke tweelingstad Bristol. 4) Cumberland Square Park: Cumberland Square Park is een sfeervol stadspark in het historische centrum van Bristol, Virginia, vlak bij de beroemde State Street die Virginia en Tennessee van elkaar scheidt. 5) Tennessee Ernie Ford Birthplace: Het Tennessee Ernie Ford Birthplace is een klein historisch huis in Bristol, Tennessee, waar de beroemde Amerikaanse zanger, radio- en televisiepersoonlijkheid Ernest Jennings Ford (bekend als Tennessee Ernie Ford) werd geboren op 13 februari 1919. Zijn grootste hit was "Sixteen Tons" (1955), een lied over het zware leven van mijnwerkers, waarmee hij internationale bekendheid kreeg. Het huis is een belangrijk onderdeel van de muziekgeschiedenis van Bristol (1223 Anderson Street). 6) Bristol Motor Speedway: De Bristol Motor Speedway is een van de beroemdste autoracebanen van de Verenigde Staten en een belangrijk symbool van de Amerikaanse autosport. De baan ligt in Bristol, Tennessee, vlak bij de grens met Virginia. De speedway staat bekend onder de bijnaam “The Last Great Colosseum” vanwege de enorme tribunes, de unieke sfeer en het oorverdovende geluid tijdens races. Je kunt hier een rondleiding of bezoek brengen aan het circuit. Ook kun je NASCAR-souvenirs kopen. Uiteraard kun je hier diverse evenementen bijwonen.

7) Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion: De Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion is één van de grootste culturele evenementen in Bristol. Dit is hét evenement van Bristol. Het festival viert de muzikale erfenis van de stad als Birthplace of Country Music en verwijst naar de beroemde Bristol Sessions van 1927. Er zijn tientallen optredens op verschillende podia met country, bluegrass, Americana, folk en rootsmuziek. Het Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion 2026 vindt plaats van: Vrijdag 11 september t/m zondag 13 september 2026 in Downtown Bristol, vooral rond State Street. Het festival duurt drie dagen en verandert het historische centrum van Bristol in één groot muziekpodium.

8) Border Bash: Border Bash is een jaarlijks gratis zomerconcertfestival in het historische centrum van Bristol. Border Bash is geen groot meerdaags festival zoals Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion, maar een reeks gezellige zomeravonden met live muziek, lokale en regionale bands, eten en drinken, kunst- en ambachtskraampjes en activiteiten voor gezinnen. De sfeer is vooral laagdrempelig en lokaal, bezoekers staan op straat, luisteren naar muziek en genieten van het historische centrum van Bristol. In 2026 bestaat de serie uit vijf concertavonden. Raadpleeg de websites voor de data. 

9) NASCAR Bristol Motor Speedway: Een NASCAR-race bij Bristol Motor Speedway is één van de meest bijzondere autosportervaringen in de Verenigde Staten. De baan staat bekend als “The Last Great Colosseum” vanwege de enorme tribunes, de korte baan en de intense sfeer. Bristol is geen gewone racebaan. De oval is slechts ongeveer 0,533 mijl (858 meter) lang, de bochten zijn zeer steil, auto's rijden extreem dicht bij elkaar en er zijn vaak spectaculaire inhaalacties en botsingen. De combinatie van een klein circuit en een stadion met meer dan honderdduizend zitplaatsen maakt Bristol één van de meest iconische NASCAR-locaties.

That is why Bristol is often called the "Twin City." Bristol's greatest fame comes from music history. In 1927, the famous Bristol Sessions took place here, which record producer Ralph Peer recorded musicians from the Appalachians. During these sessions, the first major recordings of The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers, among others, were made. These recordings had a major influence on the development of country music. In 1998, Bristol was officially recognized by the U.S. Congress as the "Birthplace of Country Music." A visit to Bristol, Tennessee–Virginia is worthwhile, especially if you are interested in American history, music, small historic towns, and the atmosphere of the Appalachians. 3) State Street: State Street is Bristol's most famous street and forms the historic heart of the unique twin city of Bristol. What makes this street special is that it lies exactly on the border between the states of Tennessee and Virginia. When you walk along State Street, you can literally step from one state to the other. State Street is the historic center of Bristol and features many buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. You will find restored historic facades, small shops and boutiques, restaurants and cafes, art galleries, murals, and street art. The street has retained much of its original charm and provides a good picture of a typical American town in the Appalachians.

4) Cumberland Square Park: Cumberland Square Park is an atmospheric city park in the historic center of Bristol, Virginia, close to the famous State Street that separates Virginia and Tennessee. The park is a quiet green space, but it also holds significant cultural and historical importance for the city. An important feature of the park is the Bristol Veterans War Memorial. This monument honors American servicemen who served in various wars. A striking feature of Cumberland Square Park is the permanent exhibition of a Vietnam-era AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter. The park is not a major national monument, but it tells a lot about Bristol. 

5) Tennessee Ernie Ford Birthplace: The Tennessee Ernie Ford Birthplace is a small historic house in Bristol, Tennessee, where the famous American singer, radio and television personality Ernest Jennings Ford (known as Tennessee Ernie Ford) was born on February 13, 1919. His biggest hit was "Sixteen Tons" (1955), a song about the hard life of miners, which brought him international fame. The house is an important part of Bristol's music history (1223 Anderson Street). It is located on the Tennessee side of Bristol, a short distance from the historic center and State Street. The house is furnished as if the Ford family lived there in the early 1920s. The house is small, but it provides a very personal glimpse into the man behind one of the most famous voices in American music history. The house is not managed as a regular museum with fixed opening hours. A visit must be arranged in advance. Tours are organized by the Bristol Historical Association. So far, there is no fixed entrance fee like at a regular museum. 

6) Bristol Motor Speedway: The Bristol Motor Speedway is one of the most famous auto racing tracks in the United States and a major symbol of American motorsports. The track is located in Bristol, Tennessee, near the border with Virginia. The speedway is known by the nickname “The Last Great Colosseum” due to the enormous grandstands, the unique atmosphere, and the deafening noise during races. You can take a tour or visit the circuit here. You can also purchase NASCAR souvenirs. Naturally, you can attend various events here.

7) Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion: The Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion is one of the largest cultural events in Bristol. This is the event of Bristol. The festival celebrates the city's musical heritage as the Birthplace of Country Music and references the famous Bristol Sessions of 1927. There are dozens of performances on various stages featuring country, bluegrass, Americana, folk, and roots music. The Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion 2026 takes place from Friday, September 11 to Sunday, September 13, 2026, in Downtown Bristol, primarily around State Street. The festival lasts three days and transforms Bristol's historic centre into one large music stage.

8) Border Bash: Border Bash is an annual free summer concert festival in the historic centre of Bristol. Border Bash is not a large multi-day festival like Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion, but a series of convivial summer evenings featuring live music, local and regional bands, food and drink, arts and crafts stalls, and family activities. The atmosphere is primarily informal and local; visitors stand in the street, listen to music, and enjoy Bristol's historic centre. In 2026, the series consists of five concert nights. 9) NASCAR Bristol Motor Speedway: A NASCAR race at Bristol Motor Speedway is one of the most unique motorsport experiences in the United States. The track is known as “The Last Great Colosseum” because of the massive grandstands, the short track, and the intense atmosphere. Bristol is no ordinary racetrack. The oval is only about 0.533 miles (858 meters) long, the turns are very steep, cars drive extremely close together, and there are often spectacular overtaking maneuvers and collisions. The combination of a small circuit and a stadium with more than one hundred thousand seats makes Bristol one of the most iconic NASCAR venues.

The original building where the 1927 Bristol Sessions were recorded, the Taylor-Christian Hat Company, unfortunately no longer exists. It was later demolished. A newer building now stands on the site, but the historic spot is marked with commemorative plaques explaining the famous recordings. Forms of country music already existed in other parts of the United States before 1927, but the Bristol Sessions marked the moment when the music was recorded and distributed on a large scale. That is why Bristol officially holds the title "Birthplace of Country Music".

In front of the building at 425 State Street (diagonally opposite the memorial plaques) stands a bronze statue wearing a cowboy hat and holding a guitar. The statue represents The Cowboy, a tribute to the early country musicians who performed and recorded in Bristol, and to the pioneers of country music and Bristol's musical history (see film).

The Paramount Bristol at 518 State Street is one of Bristol's most iconic buildings and an important part of the city's history. The cinema was built in 1929–1930 and opened its doors on February 20, 1931. It was a luxurious Art Deco-style movie palace, featuring striking illuminated signage (marquee), richly decorated interiors, and even a modern air conditioning system, which was a major attraction at the time.

Op de hoek van State Street en Piedmont Avenue staat een hoekpand die deel uit maakt van het historische centrum van Bristol en is een commercieel gebouw uit circa 1930. Het valt binnen het beschermde Bristol Commercial Historic District, een gebied met veel gebouwen uit het einde van de 19e en het begin van de 20e eeuw. De naam op de gevel verwijst naar: F.G. Pitzer Dry Goods, Notions, Millinery, Cloaks and Carpets. Dit was een warenhuis/stoffen- en kledingwinkel uit de periode waarin State Street het belangrijkste winkelgebied van Bristol was.

On the corner of State Street and Piedmont Avenue stands a corner building that is part of Bristol's historic centre and is a commercial building dating from around 1930. It is located within the protected Bristol Commercial Historic District, an area featuring many buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The name on the façade refers to: F.G. Pitzer Dry Goods, Notions, Millinery, Cloaks and Carpets. This was a department store/fabric and clothing shop from the period when State Street was Bristol's premier shopping area.

The sculpture depicts a boy and a girl making music together. They are standing, as it were, ready to step onto a stage — hence the name Take This Stage.

Het bescheiden houten woonhuis was jarenlang een particulier huis. In 1991 ontdekte de Bristol Historical Association dat het te koop stond. De vereniging kocht het om het te behouden als historisch monument en museum. Tennessee Ernie Ford zelf was enthousiast over het restauratieplan en bezocht het huis nog datzelfde jaar, kort voor zijn overlijden.

The modest wooden house was a private home for many years. In 1991, the Bristol Historical Association discovered that it was for sale. The association purchased it to preserve it as a historic monument and museum. Tennessee Ernie Ford himself was enthusiastic about the restoration plan and visited the house that same year, shortly before his passing.
